Course Description
Small Business Management

Duration – one semester, weekly in-person lectures. The Small Business Management module is directed towards those who wish to learn about managing a small firm in Ireland. It has been designed to provide students with an understanding of how to manage a small business, particularly in the Irish context. The main thrust of the course is to develop in the student an understanding of the executive requirements that are necessitated when managing one’s own enterprise. This will integrate with their overall management studies to educate students in their learning of the particular needs of small businesses. The module is designed to promote the areas of management, and to clearly communicate the tools and techniques that would assist in the running and development of a business.

Learning outcomes:

(1) Investigate the significance of small businesses within the Irish economy and their impact on socio-economic development.

(2) Critically reflect on individual managerial approaches, attitudes towards business risks and change, and their application to small business management.

(3) Develop innovative solutions by employing tools and techniques to address challenges in managing small businesses effectively.

(4) Examine the critical issues and concerns associated with the operation and expansion of small businesses, while considering their implications for the owner/manager.

(5) Differentiate between various organisational structures and strategies accessible to owner/managers of small businesses and evaluate their suitability in diverse contexts.
